Pałuki is a region on the border of Wielkopolska and Kujavia. This location has given rise to a fascinating and diversified culture which has, however, been steadily waning since WWII. Klara Prillowa, a sculptor and Pałuki enthusiast from Kcynia, managed to save much of it. These days Gustawa Patro, who hails from Wągrowiec, is the foremost champion of the Pałuki tradition. Events supporting and promoting handicrafts are held twice a year. Crafts like embroidery, straw and tissue paper chandeliers, and paper cut-outs, trades like braiding and blacksmithing, and arts like wood and clay sculpture and all represented. These are “Spring in Pałuki” in Szubin, “Summer in Pałuki” in Wągrowiec, “Autumn in Pałuki” in Żnin and “Winter in Pałuki” in Mogilno.
The name comes from an old Slavic root for pastures and meadows. The Pałuki tribes took their name from the region.
