The houses in the villages of Wielkopolska are bedecked with green birch and sweet flag branches on this day. This garlanding of houses is a hangover from an earlier belief that green branches bestowed strength and vitality on a house and its inhabitants. The customs surrounding this holiday used to be much more ebullient. Shepherds would select a king and the pitch burner would take him around the village.
