Conductor and composer, founder of the Poznańskie Słowiki [‘The Poznań Nightingales’] Boys’ and Men’s Choir, he is recognised as an international ‘ambassador’ of church choral music. He has more than 600 compositions to his credit. Mr. Stuligrosz has authored books of memories, e.g. Piórkiem słowika. O najbliższych, Poznaniu, muzyce i drogowskazach życia [‘Written with a nightingale’s quill: On my closest relatives, Poznań, music, and signposts for life’].

Born August 26, 1920 in Poznań, Mr. Stuligrosz founded the Poznańskie Słowiki Boys’ and Men’s Choir in 1945 and has toured the entire world with them. He graduated (1951) from Musicology faculty at the University of Poznań, and completed his solo singing and symphonic conducting studies with the local State Higher School of Music three years after. He lectured at that School thereafter, holding a professorship since 1973 and serving as its Rector between 1967 and 1981.

In 1956–1963, he ran the Music Editorial Unit, Polish Radio Broadcasting Station of Poznań. In recognition of his achievements, he was awarded with a.o. the Knight’s Cross, the Officer’s Cross and the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, and granted a honorary doctorate from the ‘Adam Mickiewicz’ University of Poznań. He has also received the Grand Cross of St. Sylvester the Pope, awarded by Pope John Paul II, as well as the symbolic keys to the Cities of New York, Philadelphia and Chicago.

Stefan Stuligrosz is beyond any doubt an ‘icon’ of our contemporary Poznań.
