The somewhat overlooked sanctuary in Górka Klasztorna, near Łobżenica, prides itself on having the longest pedigree in the history of Polish revelations. The Virgin Mary appeared to a poor shepherd boy on a sturdy oak in 1079. Not far from the oak was a well from which water was drawn for cattle. The water miraculously started to leak after the apparition and, in 1111, a fund set up by Bolesław III (Boleslaus the Wrymounth) financed the building of the first church here. The veneration of Mary progressed uninterrupted until the sanctuary was burnt down by protestants during the reformation. The weneration was born anew in 1684 when the Bernardines built a new brick, church here. The Passion Plays put on by the Holy Family Missionaries are enjoying increasing popularity.
