The city lies on the Warta river. It is the capital of Wielkopolska Voivodeship and the see of the Archdiocese of Poznań. An important point on the Piast Trail.
The Poznań Archdiocesan Museum is housed in the Lubrański Academy building. This was the initiative of Abp. Florian Stablewski at the end of the 19th century and is one of the oldest museum establishments in Poland.
It has a rich collection of sacred sculptures, including the oldest sculpture of the Madonna of Ołobok from around 1320 and one of the few statues of the paternal Pietà in Europe. A collection of sacred art works (reliquaries, liturgical vessels and crucifixes) occupies a separate room. Temporary exhibitions are also held in the museum. The museum has been renovated and can completely accommodate disabled people.
