A county town by the river Obra located around 50 kilometres to the south west of Poznań, by the road to Leszno.
The City Hall
The first reference about it appears in 1242. Kościan got it’s town privileges before 1310 and then, in 1400, they were confirmed by the king Władysław Jagiełło. From the XIV-th century to 1975 it was a capitol of the county.
A gothic town hall existed probably since the XV-th century. Then, between 1903-06, a new building of magistrate was built in it’s place. An entrance under the tower was drilled during the renovation in 1914.
The town hall is located in the middle of a town square. It is a three storey building with an attic in use, erected on a plan of rectangle. It is covered by a half hipped roof with tiles. On longer elevations there are also avant-corps crowned with triangular pediments. Above the front avant-corps is a quadrangular clock tower ended with a pavilion roof. Also above it there is a spire with a Polish eagle installed in 1919. On the side elevation was embedded a memorial plaque with the names of all people who died during the Second World War fighting or were murdered by the occupant.
Now in the building are placed the Regional Museum and the Registry Office.
