A town located in the Kujawskie (Kuyavian) Lake District, on the Noteć river, in Kujawy-Pomerania Province; one of the most important localities on the Piast Route.
The Romanesque church of the Name of Our Lady, referred to as ‘The Ruin’, was built in the late 12th century of cut granite stones. As a legend has it, it stands at the place of a pagan stave-temple, on a hill that was once called Mount White (Biała Góra). Rebuilt in 14th century, it later fell into ruins resulting from fires – hence its popular name. Rebuilt in 1902, it has preserved the Romanesque style rules ever since. Today, it is one of the country’s most interesting Romanesque monuments. Its front façade is crowned with two enormous towers, with a brick-wall superstructure in their upper sections (from the early 13th c.). Adjacent to the church’s rectangular solid at the east is a short presbytery with a semicircular apse. The central altar comprises a valuable gothic sculpture The Smiling Madonna, made in the end of 14th c. The walls contain three modest-sized Romanesque portals. The church’s interior is simple, mono-nave. A curiosity is three masks sculpted in granite blocks, featured in the outside wall by the portal.
