The county seat is on the Warta, about 100 km east of Poznań, on the way to Warsaw.
Konin’s oldest maintained place of worship was built after 1331. The presbytery is believed to have been built during the latter half, or even the close, of the 14th century while the body of the nave and the Gothic chapel adjoining it in the 15th. The renaissance chapel, financed by Jan Zemełka, was added at the beginning of the 17th century and the north vestibule in 1866.
The church is a three-nave building with a basilica layout. It was made of brick with stone blocks used in the lower portions. The triangular, closed presbytery has a net vault whereas the naves have star vaults with a central rib and the Gothic chapel is covered with a groin-rib vault.
The architecture of the interior has preserved a uniform Gothic character, although there are traces of later rebuilding on the outside of the church.
The furnishings comprise the neo-Gothic high altar and two 18th-century baroque altars set up in the aisles. The presbytery has the early baroque architectural tomb of Stanisław Przyjemski (d. 1595), Crown Marshal and Starosta of Konin, with a figure of the deceased lying in his knightly armour. There is a baroque altar from the first half of the 18th century and a 17th-century baptistery in the Gothic chapel by the presbytery. The baroque epitaph of Krzysztof Przyjemski (d. 1611), Starosta of Konin, is on the wall. The renaissance chapel has a rococo altar and the baroque epitaph of Jan Zemełka (d. 1607).
Two bronze front door handles in the form of lions’ heads and a sandstone baptistery from the 2nd half of the 15th century are all that remains of the church’s Gothic furnishings. The polychromes and stained glass windows were made by Eligiusz Niewiadomski, whom history remembers as the assassin of President Gabriel Narutowicz.
According to its Latin inscription, the sandstone milepost by the church was put up at the midpoint of the road between Kalisz and Kruszwica in 1151. The post is thought to be Poland’s oldest road sign.
