Wągrowiec is a county town situated on the Wełna river, in the area of Chodzieskie (Chodzież) Lake District, ca. 55 km north-east of Poznań.
Construction of this temple was started in the early years of 16th century with erection of a presbytery, whereto the nave body was later on appended. Although the temple was consecrated in 1575, construction of the vaults above the central nave and the presbytery continued well into the late 16th century.
The church is a three-nave pseudo-hall-like edifice. Adjacent at the north to its broad rectangular presbytery is a sacristry and at the south, an Our Lady of the Rosary chapel of 1586. Along with bricks, granite cut stones, probably taken from a demolished Cistercian church in Łekno, were used in the church’s construction. The building’s early-Renaissance tops are plastered. The presbytery, the main nave and the chapel are all covered by starry vaults and the side naves, by quadripartite rib vaults. The temple’s furnishing is abundant and diverse, including, among other features, ten Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo altars and a Renaissance ambo. Late-renaissance altars, the main and a chapel one – both dating to the late 16th century – were made by Mateusz Kossior, a Wielkopolska guild-member artist. The Our Lady of the Rosary chapel is adorned with a valued renaissance figural polychrome of 1587.
