A town located in the Kujawskie (Kuyavian) Lake District, on the Noteć river, in Kujawy-Pomerania Province; one of the most important localities on the Piast Route.
West of the The Ruin, an Annunciation church was built in 1898–1901 – one of the most impressive neo-Romanesque edifices in Poland. In 1909, resulting from mining damages caused by inundation of a salt mine, the northern nave’s gable wall broke away and collapsed under the ground; as a result, the church remained closed till 1929. It was in 1929 that Józef Glemp got baptised at this very temple. Born in Inowrocław, Cardinal Glemp was at a much later date made Archbishop of Warsaw and Primate of Poland. The fronton is adorned by a tremendous tower (76 m high) with a huge rosette window and a richly ornamented portal, and a tympanum with a scene of the Adoration of the Magi set against a golden mosaic. The church’s interior is three-nave, with a transept, set in a uniform style. Its interior is abundant and stylistically unambiguous. The presbytery contains a sumptuous mosaic – the work of Italian artists, representing the Holy Trinity and saints.
