The capital town of Wielkopolska, Wielkopolska Province and the Archdiocese of Poznań, Poznań is a city located on the Warta river and is a station of importance on the Piast Trail.
The local Archaeological Museum, with its seat at the Górka Palace, is one of Poland’s oldest such institutions.
The earliest historic periods are shown through the permanent exhibition ‘The Prehistory of Wielkopolska’, its core being original archaeological objects of historic value – from the Early Stone Age to the decline of Antiquity.
Enormous interest is enjoyed by the Egyptian collection, on loan from a Berlin museum and presently shown in the exhibition titled “Life and Death in the Ancient Egypt”, displaying the primary cultural aspect of the ancient Egypt – belief in the afterlife. Wooden sarcophaguses, grave outfit, priests’ masks, sculptures and murals showing the figures of gods, humans and animals are among the exhibits. There are mummies, too.
The room through which the visitor is introduced into the exhibition is a copy of the chamber comprising the sarcophagus in Tutankhamun’s grave. Part of the permanent exhibition is the section called “The Archaeology of Sudan, displaying collections from the National Museum in Khartoum. In the Museum courtyard is a 3.2-metre-high Egyptian obelisk from ca. 1200 BC, also a Berlin museum deposit.
