The Calvary of Pakość

PAKOŚĆ

Pakość is a town located in Kujawy-Pomerania Province, District (powiat) of Inowrocław, ca. 13 km west of Inowrocław. It is a stop on the Piast Route.

Pakość is home to the only wholly surviving Calvary setting in Wielkopolska and Kujawy area. Consisting of twenty-five chapels, it dates its origins back to 1628. The chapels were shaped, in their baroque forms, between 17th and 19th centuries. They are deployed on both banks of the Noteć, mostly among trees and alleys; the first of them is to be met on the town’s periphery, north of the road from Inowrocław. You will meet five more chapels as you go toward Noteć river. More will be visible in the town’s southern part, the largest group (of fifteen) – in the western section, left of the road to Barcin. On a hill, right of the road to Barcin, situated are chapels no. 20–25, incl. the Holy Sepulchre chapel and the Crucifixion church of 1661. The church houses furnishings dating to 17th and 18th centuries. A newer open Gethsemane is set upon artificial rocks on the church’s axis.

If you are making your way to the Calvary, you are recommended to park your car at St. Bonaventure’s church (at 3 Inowrocławska St.).
