Located on the Warta river, Poznań is the capital town of the land of Wielkopolska, the Province of Wielkopolska and the Poznań Archdiocese. Poznań is an important stop as you go along the Piast Trail.
The Museum of Musical Instruments is a branch of the Poznań National Museum. This is Poland’s only collection of musical instruments coming from everywhere in the world, and one of the most considerable such collections Europe-wide. The institution was conceived out of a private collection of musical instruments provided to the National Museum in 1945 by Zdzisław Szulc.
At present, the Museum has some 2,000 objects, categorised in four sections: European folk instruments; European professional instruments; non-European instruments; a music archive. Of particular value is the violin-making section where particular attention is deserved by instruments made by Polish 16th and 17th-century masters, signed by luthiers of the Groblicz and Dankwart families as well as by Kazimierz Burzeński and Stanisław Zwierzyński.
European luthiers are represented by Italian-school instruments (the Amati and Guarneri brand makers) and those made by French and German masters. The collection of pianofortes/grand pianos and upright pianos features more than 150 specimens.
The Museum has a concert hall where concerts are held. Affiliated to the Museum is an early music ensemble named ‘Collegium Musicorum Posnaniensium’. The Museum co-organises the ‘Henryk Wieniawski’ International Violinmaking Competitions as well as the ‘Zdzisław Szulc’ National Violinmaking Competitions.
