SREBRNA-GÓRA
A village in Wapno commune, district (powiat) of Oborniki, located ca. 65 km north-east of Oborniki.
In 14th century, Srebrna-Góra belonged to the Srebrnogórski family. Later on, the estate was passed on to various subsequent families. Toward the end of 18th century, it was acquired by Józef Radzimiński, Voivode of Gniezno, for whom a showy manor was built in the 1790s. In 19th century, Srebrna-Góra was taken over by the Moszczeńskis who retained it till 1939.
The residential arrangement in Srebrna-Góra is one of the most valuable and interesting classical projects delivered in Wielkopolska. It was located on a modest height, sloping as a steep escarpment on the west. It is formed by a complex of developments arranged along the sides of a rectangular courtyard enclosed in the east with a wall furnished with a balustrade and the main entrance gate. The manor house stands within the western line, two twin annexes closing it up on the south. A park has been laid out south-west of the manor, using the area’s natural configuration.
Situated on the scarp’s edge, Józef Radzimiński’s residence is a not-quite-impressive brick one-storey building, founded on vaulted cellars and covered with a tall hip roof. Its foundation projection is rectangular, the rear elevation’s central part protruding as a break. The façades are plastered and their decoration is rather modest.
The front façade’s central part displays a monumental four-column portico. It is taller than the façade and the manor building, its copestone reaching the tall roof’s ridge. Two pairs of the portico’s slender columns flank the main entrance within the façade axis, with a triangular pediment supported on them.
The entrance leads you into an interior which is astonishing with extraordinary abundance of the preserved stuccowork and painting decoration. The salon, situated within the vestibule axis and protruding as a projection toward the garden, has its walls decorated by illusionist polychromes with architectural motifs forming frames for figural representations of personages drawn from the resources of culture, mythology and antique art. The polychromes are complemented with an extremely rich and sophisticated stuccowork decoration, as characteristic to the classicism.
The study adjacent to the salon has used vegetal and landscape motifs. The dining room, situated opposite thereto, has had its walls patterned in a marble-like design. The names of artists hired for the interior’s decoration are unknown; it is presumed that they might have previously been employed at Sierniki.
