Underground Tourist Trail in the Kłodawa Salt Mine
The Kłodawa salt dome is the largest in the Polish lowlands (approx. 26 km long and 2 km wide) with an overlay barely 100m thick. Mining of the mostly rock salt began in 1956. It is interesting to note that the salt found here is pink salt. The colour comes from the rare natural occurrence of having been infused with iron. Kłodawa is the only place where it is found in Europe and the nearest other such place is in Pakistan. For this reason, the deposits have been protected under the Natura 2000 program since 2008. Kłodawa salt is 97.5% pure sodium chloride and does not require further enrichment. It is merely crushed, ground and graded. Kłodawa is currently the largest salt mine in Poland and accounts for some 88% of the country’s rock salt production (approx. 650,000 tonnes per annum). The salt is expected to last another 40 years.
