The county seat is on the Noteć river, approx. 65 km north-west of Poznań, on the road to Kołobrzeg.
The temple was likely built in 1570-1580 and funded by the Czarnkowski family, who owned the city. It was a collegiate church between 1632 and 1821. The building has three naves. The 16th-century Chapel of the Guardian Angels adjoins the presbytery from the south, while the late 17th-century Chapel of the Scourging of Jesus adjoins it from the north.
The neo-Gothic cupola was placed on the tower in 1855. The star vault in the nave has been preserved from when the church was built. The valuable interior furnishing is mostly baroque. Two rows of rococo stalls from c. 1768 are arranged on the sides of the presbytery and there is a late 17th-century passion group on the rood screen.
The early baroque sarcophagus of Sędziwój Czarnkowski (d. 1627), Starosta General of Wielkopolska, is in the Guardian Angels Chapel. This is the work of Poznań pewterer Jakub Kanadej and has a coffin portrait of the deceased. The chapel altar has a painting of the Guardian Angel from c. 1630 and attributed to the renowned Gdańsk painter, Herman Han.
