The Church of the Assumption of Our Lady and St. Stanislaus Bishop and Martyr in Września

WRZEŚNIA

A county town, situated ca. 45 km east of Poznań, by the road to Konin.

The church was probably built in mid-15th century, with the tower added toward the century’s end. A fire of the town destroyed the temple in 1629. In 1655/1656, the Swedish army set the edifice on fire, which caused its partial collapse. A rebuilding or rather, redevelopment exercise was embarked on ca. 1792, in line with the plans of Jan Binder of Kórnik. Another thorough restoration project was carried out in 1881–1887 according to a design by Zygmunt Gorgolewski.

The church is a basilica-type three-nave building with a polygonally enclosed presbytery and a robust tower at the west. On side nave extensions are located chapels and other space arrangements which, set in an order in 1881, form a bypass around the presbytery. The main nave and the presbytery are covered by a coffered ceiling from the late 19th century. The gothic cross vault is only surviving in the porch beneath the tower. The most interesting interior furnishing element is an early-baroque altar made ca. 1640.
