These people take their name from Bamberg in Bavaria, from where their forebears they came to move into the war ravaged villages around Poznań during the first half of the 18th century. The descendants of those first settlers, being similar to the local Catholic population, assimilated quickly. Many Poznań families still cultivate the memory of their ancestors from faraway Bamberg. The costumes worn by the women, known as “Bamberki”, is a visible (although unknown in Bamberg) mark of their identity. These combine elements of Bavarian and Wielkopolska garb and have evolved under specific circumstances over several decades to become impressive and attractive ceremonial costumes whose most spectacular appurtenances are their floral cornets. These days, Bamberki in regional costume can be seen participating in Corpus Christi processions and commemorating the arrival of the first settlers on 1 August 1719 at the Poznań Bamberka monument in Poznań’s Old Town Marketplace on the first Sunday in August.
The Bambrzy Museum on ul. Mostowa has many mementos handed down by Poznań Bambrzy families.
