Two customs which still survive among school children are taking an effigy of Marzanna out of the village at the end of winter and dubbing it “Śmiercichą, Śmiercią, Marzanką” (this chant signals death to winter) and bringing in the symbol of spring – a green spruce branch adorned with coloured ribbons – with “maikiem, gaikiem, nowym lotkiem” (this chant welcomes spring). Some schools organise trips to throw Marzanna on a bonfire on this day – provided there is a river or lake nearby.
