
The county seat is situated on the Prosna, about 140 km south-east of Poznań.
The Kalisz District Museum has been in existence since 1948. Permanent exhibitions illustrate the history of Kalisz and environs. The archaeological collections come from the south-east of Wielkopolska. The ethnographic collections boast items from Cameroon and Sudan, in addition to regional exhibits.
The arts and crafts collections include a collection of 19th century silver. The painting collection includes works by contemporary Kalisz artists as well as portraits of Sarmatians and urban merchants. The museum comprises the Tadeusz Kulisiewicz Centre of Drawing and Graphics and the archaeological reserve in Zawodzie, Maria Dąbrowska’s manor and the natural history museum of old Kalisz folk architecture in Russów, Kalisz Country, and the Museum of Palace Interiors in Lewków, Ostrów Wielkopolski County.
