The county seat is located approx. 50 km north-east of Poznań, on the road to Toruń.
The Museum of the Origins of the Polish State in Gniezno has existed since 1978 and continues the traditions of the Gniezno Archaeological Museum, which had been going since 1956. The exhibition is dedicated to the development of Polish statehood, from the early Middle Ages to the last Piast king. The permanent exhibition comprises one of Poland’s largest collections of Gothic and renaissance stove tiles, a collection of 19th-century paintings on historical themes, and portraits and scenes connected with the history of the Piasts and Gniezno.
The museum’s greatest attraction is an hour-long audio-visual performance (in several languages) familiarising people with the history and culture of Piast Poland by taking them on an extraordinary journey through time and space.
Temporary exhibitions, usually related to the origins of the state, are also held.
