The city lies on the Warta river. It is the capital of Wielkopolska Voivodeship and the see of the Archdiocese of Poznań. It is an important point on the Piast Trail.
Odwach
On the Old Market Square, across the Franciszkańska street there is the oldest military building in Poznań. It was built thanks to the influence of the starost of Greater Poland, Kazimierz Raczyński between 1785–87. The building was designed by Jan Christian Kamsetzer who was an architect of the royal palace in Łazienki, Warsaw. In the middle part of an attic we can see the crest of the king Stanisław August Poniatowki – Ciołki, to the right – the crest of Poznań, to the left – the crest of Raczyński family – Nałęcz. This project of his Kamsetzer must have considered as extremely well done since many elements from the Odwach’s architecture may be also found in Łazienki.
Generally at the beginning the place was used by the City Guard, then the Police and until 1939, the building belonged to the Military. After the Second World War it was re-built and became the Museum of History of the Working-class people (named after Marcin Kasprzak). Today we have the museum of the Greater Poland Uprising (Wielkopolska Uprising the of 1918–1919) there.
